Abstract

I would like to show the positive function of the Internet from a perspective of social movement theory—especially a model of networked social movement. But social movement theory faced the problem of individualization, therefore it require new formation of movement. And then cyberspace may be preferable ground for possible place of activism. According to some authors, Cyberspace has significant function on this society with the interactive relationships between real spaces. When it comes to social movement, the Internet is still important medium for their activities: information exchange, free speech and publishing, and making network. In this presentation, I take blogs by net cafe refugees in contemporary Japan and their voices from cyberspace show us a tentative possibility of networking and empowering to be social movement.
